Catbird was established in 2000 by CenterGate Research, a group founded by successful Internet infrastructure pioneers, including the venerable Ron Lachman. Catbird is the latest of Mr. Lachman’s many successful ventures.
2000-2002: Initial Focus on Network Monitoring
The initial focus of the CenterGate Team was to apply their cumulative experience in developing Internet content and distribution networks to the next level, envisioning a patent-pending fully-automated management system capable of providing customers with real-time security and performance monitoring for network and applications via a distributed network of stateless agents.
2002-2005: Managed Security Service Provider in the Banking Industry
In early 2002, Catbird began operating as a vertical MSSP primarily focused on mid-sized companies in the financial industry. Catbird quickly recognized the need to expand it’ security offering to include internal network security utilizing the same patent-pending automated management system. The company successfully built an installed base of hundreds of mid-sized companies that today rely on Catbird’s web and internal network security.
2005- 2007: Partner-based Physical Network Security
In late 2005, a new executive team began a transition. The new team brought expertise in enterprise software sales through channels as well as a deep understanding of disruptive impact of Software-as-a-Service business models. In 2007 the company moved it’s operations from Chicago to Silicon Valley. Despite these dramatic changes, Catbird innovations in virtual and physical network security are based on insights gathered from years of experience with hundreds of customers across a variety of industries. Catbird’s comprehensive security solution for virtual and physical networks is partner-centric from inception because we believe that service providers will play a growing role in the delivery of services.
2007: Virtual Network Security
In July of 2007 Catbird announced it’s entry into the nascent virtual infrastructure security market with the delivery of the V-Agent, the first VMware-certified Virtual Appliance delivering comprehensive network security. In October 2007, Catbird announced delivery of the Pocket V-Agent, the first USB-based, certified, virtual security appliance capable of network monitoring for security assessment, inspection, and data protection. In November 2007, Catbird was awarded the prestigious 2007 VAR Business Innovator of the Year Award in the Virtualization Category.
