Last year, the North American Electric Reliability Council adopted the Urgent Action Cyber Security Standards. This standard requires each utility to implement a cyber security program to protect critical cyber assets related to the reliable operation of the bulk electric systems.
This Urgent Action was replaced by a permanent standard for cyber security. This standard applies to Reliability Authorities, Balancing Authorities, Interchange Authorities, Transmission Service Providers, Transmission Owners, Transmission Operators, Generator Owners, Generator Operators and Load Serving Entities.
As of early 2004, all electricity sector companies are now responsible for a complete self assessment. This self-regulation implies taking of the best, most comprehensive solutions available.
